PREVENTING CAR THEFT

Stolen cars and especially their components have always been on steady demand. For a thief nothing appeals like stealing a car.  A car or a motor-cycle is self-propelled and fully equipped for a fast getaway.

  • The owner or driver of a car should not leave the vehicle unattended without locking the ignition and removing the key. A significant number of automobiles are stolen because drivers fail to remove ignition keys.

  • All members of the family should know how to protect the car against theft. Licenses, registration books or other identifying papers that a thief could misuse should never be left in the car. Keys should be carefully guarded.

MAKING IT REALLY DIFFICULT FOR A CAR THEIF

  • Install a car alarm or any other security device.  If you cannot afford to buy one, try to imitate one.  A small sign that a car has security device also deters a potential car thief.

  • Park in a well-lighted area.

  • Close all windows, lock all doors.

  • Activate any theft deterrent device you may have.

  • Put packages or valuable out of sight.

  • Do not leave valuables in your car even if it is locked.

  • Do not keep license, registration or title in car. If left in car, thieves can use these documents to sell your car if stolen, or to impersonate you when they are challenged by police.

  • If you have a garage, use it. Lock both the vehicle and the garage.

  • Don’t keep vehicles in your house compound without locking.

  • Two wheelers should be kept in the safe places and at least some sort of lock must be used.

  • When you park your vehicle in the parking area, ask somebody to keep an eye over it.

  • Never leave the vehicle door unlocked. Nor the windows partially open. Make sure that quarter glasses are properly secured.

  • Never leave the keys hanging in the ignition.

  • Double-check all doors, including the trunk, to ensure that they are properly secured.

  • Etch registration number of your car on the rear & front window screens and windowpanes.

  • Cut down on extra fittings, as these attract prospective thieves.

  • Never leave important documents in the glove box.

  • Never identify your key ring with your name.

  • Do not offer a lift to anyone you do not know.

  • If someone needs assistance, stop some distance away and communicate through locked doors and partially opened window. Always stay in the car with the engine running. Tell them you will send help.

  PRESONAL IDENTIFICATION MARKS

Identification of vehicles after they are recovered is a big problem for police and law enforcement agencies.

  • Etch the Vehicle Registration Number in several hard-to-find spots, using an engraving tool.

  • If your car is stolen, the police will need specific information to identify the car, parts and accessories. Take the time to record detailed information. If a car thief replaces your license plates, alters the vehicle identification number or repaints the car, other points of identification will be available.
